Do ligového kádru Sparty se dostal v roce 1950 a po dvou letech slavil na Letné mistrovský titul. V roce 1953 už byl na soupisce tehdejšího mužstva ÚDA Praha (později Dukla), ale od roku 1957 už zase oblékal sparťanský dres. Rozloučil se s ním v roce 1963, kdy odešel pomoci tehdy prvoligovému nováčkovi do pražských Jinonic – Spartaku Motorlet. Nohy i mozek Jana Hertla hýřily fotbalovou inteligencí a dovedností, míč byl jeho obrovským přítelem. Fanoušci ho však nejen oslavovali, ale i zatracovali. Na svoji adresu slyšel bouřlivý potlesk, avšak často také hlasitý pískot. Talentu měl spoustu, ale trpělivost potřebovali mít jeho spoluhráči a diváci. Musel si totiž zakličkovat i v sebesložitější situaci. Hrál v útoku i záloze, ale nejčastěji ve středu obrany, takže většinu času strávil v ohni velkého vápna. Žáru se však nebál, nervy měl železné, trému neznal. Bezmezně si věřil, a tak brankář často trnul hrůzou a spoluhráči zavírali oči. Skoro vždy však Hertl chladnokrevně vykličkoval s míčem z ohně a poslal ho do bezpečí. Byl to fotbalový Paganini, který hrál své ďábelské melodie na jediné struně. Ale běda, když tato struna někdy praskla a míč skončil vzápětí za zády vlastního brankáře. Jan Hertl dodnes zůstal v paměti sparťanských fanoušků. Určitě díky svým vynikajícím výkonům, které mu otevřely dveře i do národního mužstva a na dva světové šampionáty, ale hlavně pro jeho slabůstku – bezbřehé mazlení s míčem. - V roce 1952 přestoupil tento technicky vybavený, inteligentní, klidný až nebezpečně chladnokrevný fotbalista do týmu ATK Praha, později ÚDA Praha, nyní Dukla Praha. Během pěti sezón v tomto vojenském týmu dvakrát oslavil titul mistra Československa. Následoval návrat do pražské Sparty, tehdy pod názvem Spartak Praha Sokolovo. Hertlovou výhodou bylo, že mohl hrát jak v záložní, tak i v obranné řadě. Dokonce tu a tam naskočil i v útoku. Prvoligovou kariéru dohrál v Motorletu Praha ve svých pětatřiceti letech. V československé nejvyšší soutěži odehrál 281 zápasů a nastřílel 29 branek. Byl univerzálním hráčem, známým vytříbenou technikou s míčem. This siege lasted almost 25 minutes with brief pauses. At times, our team was forced to defend with nine players, as Hemele, Kacáni, Vlk, and even Hertl rushed in to help the overworked defenders. The Romanian forwards couldn't find the net, but they certainly couldn't be faulted for their lack of effort. Petschowski, Serfőző, Szuru, and Ene seized every opportunity to shoot and tried to surprise our goalkeeper with long-range efforts. However, Dolejši, who was in excellent form, always intervened at the right moment. The defenders precisely marked the Romanian forwards according to the coach's instructions, and the attacking forwards provided good cover".
